Pompeo spotlights Pakistan as latest tension point between Washington and Beijing

  • U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday criticized the idea of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout for Pakistan, whose economy is on the brink of crisis.
  • The remarks were specifically pointing to China and how it would benefit from such a deal, furthering U.S. criticism of China's involvement in many emerging markets through its One Belt One Road program.
  • Some investors now worry that the U.S. stance could prevent a bailout from being approved, thanks also to deteriorating of U.S.-Pakistani relations.
